IETA Article 6 Policy Briefs Ahead of COP29 – Full Paper

Download

In preparation for COP29, IETA has developed a series of position papers on key topics that require resolution, including authorisation, the Article 6.2 International Registry, first transfer, sequencing, and emissions avoidance.

While we welcomed the significant breakthroughs achieved at COP26, progress in negotiations has been slow in the years since. A decision at COP29 is essential for advancing Article 6 implementation, which is crucial for scaling international carbon markets and enhancing Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

We encourage all Parties to remain focused on technical considerations and work constructively towards an ambitious outcome at COP29. Our positions, informed by consensus-based discussions with IETA member experts, align with our guiding principles of environmental integrity, efficiency, clarity, broad participation, and maximisation of market effectiveness.
